Sister Phumi is a singer, songwriter and a recording artist. Known for contributing immensely to the musical career and recordings of the official band member of blessed memory of Lucky Dube

Phumi Maduna is the only daughter of Mr & Mrs Maduna.She lost her dad while still in high school in New Castle.She is the last born, with three older brothers all of whom are married.Her mother an ex teacher at Matseke high school, passed away 2008 February, anted the best for her only girl and singing was not what her mom expected for her, though she supported her.And because Phumi had the love for singing she wanted her family to believe music was not so bad after all.She started singing at school concerts in New Castle.

Phumi and the late Brenda Fassie joined Sam Mhangwana stage play called Hungry Spoon, just to keep themself busy, they later joined Gibson Kente & a singing group Amakhowa (The mushrooms).They went their separate ways to pursue their solo careers, Phumi joined Sould Brothers as warm-up singer & later joined the jaws.

Phumi met Madoda Malotana at a recording studio while singing as a back up for the late Margaret Singana’s album Isiphiwo Sam.Madoda & Phumi started rehearsing together forming a group Cheek to Cheek, in 1985 they released a hit album, “SO GOOD SO NICE” which sold thousands of copies making them the best selling group at the time.The album was released under CCP Records with the help of Mally Watson.
Cheek to Cheek made hit after hit, and kept going.
1987 – ONE MORE TRY, 1988 – CAN’T BUY LOVE, 1989 – RE-UNITED, hit the shelves.
She released a solo album as Phumi Maduna with CCP called BAD GUY which sold more copies than Cheek to Cheek.
1990 Cheek to Cheek came up with ITS BEEN A LONG TIME still under CCP.

In 1992 Cheek to Cheek left CCP for Gallo Records and released another hit LET ME LIVE MY LIFE, while still with Gallo, Phumi joined Lucky Dube as a back up vocalist and toured the USA with him.

She met Sister Carol a female reggae singer who inspired her to record a reggae album in 1993 with Gallo under the name Sister Phumi, called SUBSTITUTE followed by SWEETER THAN EVER & STYLE AND FASHION which was produced by Eugene Mthethwa of Trompies.She became extremely passionate about reggae and the more she performed with Lucky Dube the more her love grew for reggae.Her reggae albums made a huge follow up overseas.She then toured the USA, JAPAN, AUSTRALIA, the FIJI ISLANDS, BOTZWANA, ZAMBIA, ZIMBABWE, NAMIBIA ETC.

She took a break from recording, although she was still performing at some venues.She landed a contract with furniture stores doing promotion for the entire South Africa.

In 202 Phumi came back with a thrilling album simply titled “STOCK TAKING”.The ten track album was a cross over between POP, KWAITO and TRADITIONAL.

2004 she came up with a very, very hot jazz album which was a surprise to her loyal fans, the woman is versatile indeed.The beautiful album “DINAKA LE MEROPA”, featuring hit songs like CHISKOP TAMATIE, LOTTO, BHUTI & WOZA 2010 which made SAFA to call her to perform for SOUTH AFRICA against NIGERIA in november 2004with the group Malaika.She left for Uganda for the PAM AWARDS as a guest performer same year 2004.2010 Phumi is under a new record label Lagela Records, and has released a reggae single, REGELA BEAT featuring Lucky Dube tribute, she is also busy with live shows, performed with stars of the 80’s during the World cup FIFA 2010 shows, packaging with Dalom music Botzwana Tour (Splash) & promoting her new album.Phumi just came back from Zimbabwe, performing for indipendence with Patricia Majalisa.
